Serre Chevalier Summer Jazz Festival
Concerts by Louis Sclavis & David Chevalier Trio.
This 4th edition of the festival will offer audiences concerts with eclectic aesthetics that are as close as possible to French musical creation.
– Chapelle Saint Arnould – Louis Sclavis (solo clarinet)
Louis Sclavis needs no introduction. A virtuoso and imaginative clarinettist, he is constantly on the lookout for new musical experiences and adventures. His atypical career has led him to play with many musicians from the international scene (Michel Portal, Henri Texier, Bernard Lubat, Eric Le Lann, and many others)
In 1988, he was awarded the Django Reinhardt Prize for "best French jazz musician", and in 1993, he won the "Djangodor" in the "best French jazz record of the year" category.
Louis Sclavis has been patron of the Serre Chevalier Summer Jazz Festival since its inception in 2023, and has performed at every edition of the festival, whether as a soloist, duo, trio or quartet.
This year, he is experimenting with a new concert venue: the Saint-Arnould chapel in Saint-Chaffrey. This treasure trove of local heritage, with its 15th-century frescoes, is the ideal setting for a solo recital at midday. Louis Sclavis will sound his various clarinets in an acoustic that invites you to travel, dream and meditate.
– Eglise de Saint Chaffrey -David Chevalier Trio
Matthieu Donarier is a saxophonist, clarinettist, improviser and composer. A lover of literature and photography, he has been involved in a wide range of musical collaborations for over twenty years in France and Europe. He has shared the stage with such prestigious musicians as Dave Liebman, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Joachim Kühn, Bruno Chevillon, Jean-
François Jenny-Clarke, Bojan Z, and others.
Always in search of sound interactions in the moment, he remains focused on creation in the field of contemporary jazz, tending to erase the boundaries between written and improvised music.
His longstanding duo with double bassist Sébastien Boisseau has recently been joined by guitarist David Chevalier to form an explosive trio with a multitude of sound combinations.
Sébastien Boisseau was spotted early on by J.F. Jenny-Clark and Daniel Humair, and it was in 2000 that he won first prize for soloist at the Concours National de la Défense in Paris. He has collaborated and performed with many jazz stars, including Daniel Humair, Joachim Kühn, Marc Ducret, Martial Solal, Pat Metheny and Michel Portal.
David Chevalier studied classical guitar before developing a passion for composition, improvisation and jazz. A travelling companion of Laurent Dehors and Patrice Caratini, he is particularly interested in the points where baroque music meets contemporary jazz. He has adopted the theorbo and the baroque guitar, but has not abandoned the electric guitar. His long collaboration with Sébastien Boisseau and drummer Christophe Lavergne culminated in the album Standards & Avatars.
