Night at the Saint-Véran Observatory

Reservations are required for this unforgettable experience: a night at the Saint-Véran Paul Felenbok Observatory to explore the starry sky!

The observatory has only eight beds and two rooms, so it’s best to book several months in advance.

And if the weather forecast really doesn’t allow for stargazing, the observatory staff will contact you the day before. But this is still the Queyras, so we’re spoiled when it comes to the weather—the sky is blue all year round.

A tip: a good night’s sleep before you go won’t be a luxury. Oh, and be sure to bring a warm down jacket and a hat—even in summer! Up there at 3,000 meters, it’s freezing! Don’t forget sunglasses and water for the hike, plus your picnic for dinner.

When you arrive up there, the science guides will welcome you with the warmth and enthusiasm of true enthusiasts. You’ll be comfortable in the small dorms, which have only two bunk beds each.

Everyone brings their own dinner, and we all eat together in a friendly, cheerful atmosphere. Plus, everything you need is provided on-site: plates, cutlery, and everything you need to heat up your picnic (gas stove, oven, microwave, fondue set).

And what about science? First, a tour of the facilities: telescopes, astronomical missions, a wide variety of computers, energy self-sufficiency, and eco-friendly construction—we’ll cover it all. Before the Sun sets behind a peak over 3,000 meters high, we’ll observe the Sun through a telescope and sketch the night sky as the first stars appear. Then, after dinner, when it’s pitch black, that’s when the real fun begins. You’ll tour the dome housing the 620 mm telescope (it’s big—really big!), then the science educator will become your star guide, helping you observe the deep sky, star clusters, and planets. In the early morning, observe the famous “green ray”—a magical sight as the sun rises over the mountains.

Note: If you can’t find a time slot that fits your schedule at the Observatory, you can explore the Queyras night sky during an “Astro 2000” stargazing evening at the Maison du Soleil et de l’Astronomie, located in the village of Saint-Véran.
