Food industry

A fast-growing sector

With its powerful agricultural base and exceptional terroir, the Hautes-Alpes boasts a booming agri-food industry. From cured meats and cheeses to wines and arboriculture, the range of products on offer has diversified considerably in recent years. This dynamic is underpinned by two major assets: local agricultural roots and tourist appeal, which stimulates consumption of local products.

Emblematic
productions

Seven cheese dairies, including La Durance, Ebrard and Sacré Willy, promote local dairy production, while salaisons from Champsaur and Écrins perpetuate the region’s renowned charcuterie expertise. Winegrowers such as Tresbaudon and Allemand contribute to the upmarket positioning of Alpine wines, alongside BASP and La Tourmente craft breweries, which are making their mark in a fast-growing market. Spirits, from Guillaumette, Le Plantivore and the Saint-Véran distillery, complete this diversified offering, not forgetting emblematic specialties such as tourtons and ravioles du Champsaur. To support this industry, a high-performance logistics network relies on regional transporters and national players such as Alpagel, a refrigeration champion, enabling Haute-Alpes products to gain visibility and competitiveness on French markets.

Acomplete value chain

The département has succeeded in structuring its sectors around a veritable value chain, from cultivation to distribution. As a result, local producers find solid outlets, whether in short-distance circuits, local shops or regional supermarkets. This organization guarantees not only the quality of products, but also their visibility on a market in search of authenticity. The agri-food sector in the Hautes-Alpes illustrates the vitality of a region where tradition and innovation go hand in hand.

Infrastructures
to serve the industry

To support this growth, new infrastructures are being built, such as a 100% southern malting plant and a brand-new slaughterhouse in Gap. This equipment strengthens local self-sufficiency and facilitates the processing of agricultural produce, by limiting logistical constraints. They are helping to upgrade products and professionalize the sector’s players, who can also count on a dynamic domestic market with the 5 million tourists who visit the Hautes-Alpes every year.
