Mountaineering

The pioneers

Up here, mountaineering has been written for over a century and a half. From the pioneers of the XIXᵉ century like Edward Whymper, the first to climb the Barre des Écrins, or Coolidge William Auguste Brevoort, who mapped the massif, to the great figures of today, the Écrins have forged an alpine culture of daring and humility. La Barre des Écrins, Pelvoux, La Meije: each mythical summit continues the legacy of those who paved the way.
