From verdant valleys to the highest Alpine peaks, the Hautes-Alpes<\/strong> is home to over forty refuges, veritable gateways to the mountains. For nearly 30 years<\/strong>, refuge wardens have been rallying around the common values of sharing, authenticity and respect for nature. Nestled in a mountain pasture, hidden along a path, in the heart of a larch forest or perched at an altitude of<\/strong> over 3,000 m<\/strong>, each refuge tells its own story and offers a unique experience. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

The refuge,<\/strong>a destination in its own right<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Originally, a refuge is “a place where one retreats to escape danger, to take shelter”.<\/strong> Appearing on the great passes for travelers crossing the Alps, many were built in the XIX\u1d49 century<\/strong> with the rise of modern mountaineering. Initially rudimentary, similar to shepherd’s huts with communal sleeping quarters, refuges gradually modernized, offering comfort and conviviality while remaining in touch with the mountains. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

“The summit is only the beginning of the journey”,<\/strong> wrote Edmund Hillary<\/strong> in 1953<\/strong>. In the refuges, passionate men and women transform each stop into an enchanted interlude. To be a warden is to cultivate a spirit of sharing and hospitality, guided by a love of the great outdoors and a nature that is at once beautiful, fragile and unpredictable. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Energy autonomy is crucial for isolated refuges. Despite their altitude<\/strong>, climate<\/strong> and difficult access<\/strong>, many refuges in the Alps rely on renewable energies: solar, photovoltaic, wind and small hydroelectric power stations. Combined with eco-friendly materials and optimized waste and wastewater management, they make these refuges veritable laboratories for ecological transition. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In summer, the refuges of the Hautes-Alpes<\/strong> come alive to the rhythm of the high altitude trails and balcony passes, becoming welcoming stopovers. In winter, under the snow of the larches, they welcome ski tourers<\/strong> and snowshoe trekkers. In spring and autumn, the mountains reveal their contrasts, offering a gentle, wild and authentic experience. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
