The names of the legendary cols resonate like an echo: Izoard, Granon, Galibier&#8230; <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull step-by-step has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-ws-columns alignwide has-2-columns are-vertically-aligned-center layout-5050\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-ws-column\"><div class=\"wrapper\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-title-1\">The Tour <strong>in the Hautes-Alpes<\/strong>, the big story<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1905, the year the Tour de France first passed over the Col Bayard, the Hautes-Alpes region has been unrolling the pages of a book devoted entirely to cycling. Here we come across history with a capital &#8220;H&#8221;, exploits and sweat, smiles and tears. &#8221; <strong>When we came here over a century ago, the Tour de France changed dimension<\/strong> &#8220;, recalled Christian Prudhomme, the event&#8217;s director. In the days leading up to the race, villages and legendary mountain passes come alive with banners, campervans and conviviality. <strong>On D-Day<\/strong>, the caravan opens the festivities before the peloton arrives, driven by a collective fervor that reminds us that the Tour is as much a celebration as a competition. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-ws-column\"><div class=\"wrapper\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-ws-image\"><div class=\"wrapper\"><div class=\"group-media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hautes-alpes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/7b3a5554-1240x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"single_image ws-image-78312\"><div class=\"credits\">P. For a few hours, the department&#8217;s legendary roads become a playground exclusively for cycling enthusiasts. Everyone can take on these legendary climbs at their own pace. A pass that still reverberates with the mano \u00e0 mano between Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar and the Dane&#8217;s anthological success. A legendary episode that, like many others, will go down in history.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For almost a century, the Hautes-Alpes region has regularly written some of the finest pages in the history of the Tour de France. <strong>Flashback<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item is-style-bg-grey\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2022<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jonas Vingegaard&#8217;s &#8220;Granon coup<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<p>An incredible battle between the yellow jersey of Slovenia&#8217;s Tadej Pogacar and Denmark&#8217;s Jonas Vingegaard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The climb would turn the general classification on its head, with the Dane winning the stage in solidaire at 2413 m after having truly laid waste to the Slovenian yellow jersey in the final laces.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<p>Jonas Vingegaard will then don the precious tunic and take it all the way to Paris to pocket his first Tour de France.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Silver wedding in Gap<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<p>In 2019, Gap welcomes the Tour de France for the <sup>25th<\/sup> time, with a finale on Avenue Foch, considered by Tour de France organizers to be &#8220;the most beautiful finish line after the Champs Elys\u00e9es&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<p>Since 1931, when Jef Demuysere won under the plane trees of Avenue Jean Jaur\u00e8s, Gap has been a major stopover at the foot of the Alps. Andr\u00e9 Leducq (1933), Georges Speicher (1934), Raphael Geminiani (1950), Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Bernard (1986), Alexandre Vinokourov (2003), Ruben Plaza Molima (2015) and, more recently, Matt\u00e9o Trentin (2019), have all added their names to the honours list of a town that proudly displays its proximity to the world of cycling. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item is-style-bg-grey\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2017<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warren Barguil, something new at the top of Izoard<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item is-style-default\">\n<p>After the Galibier in 2011, the organizers have decided to stage a stage finish at the summit of the Col de l&#8217;Izoard on July 20, 2017. A prestigious dimension for a stage between Brian\u00e7on and Izoard. A nod to this mythical pass and a Casse D\u00e9serte that still seems to resonate with the past exploits of Bartali, Coppi and Bobet.    <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item is-style-default\">\n<p>In his polka-dot Best Climber jersey, Frenchman Warren Barguil raises his arms to the sky in the Alps to claim the greatest solo success of his career.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2011<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Andy Schleck and Thomas Voekcler celebrate the Galibier centenary<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<p>One hundred years ago, on July 12, 1911, the Col du Galibier saw the first riders in its history pass through. To celebrate the centenary of that day, the Tour de France has chosen July 21, 2011 as the date for the highest finish in the history of the Tour de France, at 2642 m above sea level.   <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<p>That year, Andy Schleck attacked 60 km from the finish of the stage, which came from Italy (Pinerolo) via the Agnel and Izoard passes. In fourth place overall, the Luxembourger quickly opened up a gap on the yellow jersey group led by Frenchman Thomas Voeckler. At the summit of the Galibier, he finally lifted his arms, more than two minutes ahead of his brother Fr\u00e4nk. For 15 seconds, Thomas Voeckler retains his yellow jersey.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historic!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-ws-image\"><div class=\"wrapper\"><div class=\"group-media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hautes-alpes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2003.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"single_image ws-image-78342\"><div class=\"credits\">Le Dauphin\u00e9 Lib\u00e9r\u00e9<\/div><\/div><p class=\"caption\"><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2003<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beloki falls, Armstrong ploughs on in Gap!<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<p>These are the images that went round the world. On July 14, 2003, under a blazing sun and on melting asphalt, Joseba Beloki (second overall) and Lance Armstrong (yellow jersey) sped to the finish. Kazakh rider Alexandre Vinokourov was in hot pursuit.    <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<p>On the descent of the Col de Manse (La Rochette), made dangerous by the intense heat which melted the tar, the Spaniard crashed heavily at the exit of a hairpin, going over his bike.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staying in his wheel, the American avoided him with a cyclo-cross reflex, jumped a ditch and cut across the field to get back on the road one bend down.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<p>In the meantime, Vinokourov passed through and went on to win in Gap. Injured, the Spaniard did not return to competition until 2004, but never regained his true level.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for Armstrong, the story will soon take a new turn&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1975<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bernard Thevenet soars above the Izoard<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<p>What a Tour 1975!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the morning of the stage, Louison Bobet whispered in the ear of Bernard Thevenet, overjoyed by his victory the day before: &#8221; <em>To become a cycling great, you have to cross the Izoard in the lead with the yellow jersey<\/em> &#8220;.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<p>The Frenchman declared a little later at the finish: &#8221; <em>There was a huge crowd on the Izoard, filling the road and pulling away at the last moment. It was a real communion between the public and me <\/em>&#8220;. Thevenet seems to be hovering above the Grande Boucle.  A week later, he won his first Tour de France ahead of Merckx.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-ws-image\"><div class=\"wrapper\"><div class=\"group-media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hautes-alpes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ocana-podium-orcieres-1971-archives-ot-orcieres.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"single_image ws-image-78357\"><div class=\"credits\">Archives OT Orci\u00e8res<\/div><\/div><p class=\"caption\"><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1971<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Luis Ocana or the unfinished symphony<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<p>Described as Eddy Merckx&#8217;s great rival in the 1971 Tour de France, Spaniard Luis Ocana chose July 8 in the Alps to deliver his final blow between Grenoble and the resort of Orci\u00e8res-Merlette, where he crossed the finish line solo.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<p>Eddy Merckx conceded him eight minutes and forty-two seconds and relinquished his first yellow jersey. Merckx told the press: &#8221; <em>Today, Ocana watched over us like El Cordob\u00e8s in the bullring watches over his bulls <\/em>&#8220;. A few days later, in the Pyrenees, a terrible fall on the Col de Mant\u00e9 dashed his hopes of winning the Tour de France.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item is-style-bg-grey\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1953<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Louison Bobet walked on the moon!<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item is-style-default\">\n<p>He&#8217;s known as <strong>the Izoard man<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>  It was on this Hautes-Alpes pass, with its famous lunar-like &#8220;Casse D\u00e9serte&#8221;, that Louison Bobet built his legend and won his greatest trophies, such as the day on July 22, 1953, when he soloed his way to his first Tour de France success on the Izoard. A stage win in Brian\u00e7on and the yellow jersey. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1949<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A monument at Galibier to celebrate Henri Desgrange&#8217;s &#8220;Act of Adoration<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-scrollable-section-item ws-section-scrollable-item\">\n<p>&#8221; <em>O Sappey! O Laffrey! O Col Bayard! O Tourmalet!
